What’s Your Top Survival Tip For Managing HIV In The Summer Heat?
i am 29 years never sick and on one medication Biktarvy and undetectable T cells in the high 700's
I walk everyday about 4-5 miles and take a water bottle with me. Just a small one and then I fill it up again at a drinking fountain. Being in NC the summers are brutal so I walk early in the morning about 7-9 and then back home. I also try and drink enough water during the day. I had meningitis 15 years ago which was misdiagnosed by doctors as pneumonia so it progressed and I almost died. I didn't realize how it affected my brain at the time but now I do. I try to stay cool and when I go out try and be mindful of what I need as far as staying hydrated.
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Dehydration can worsen the side effects of HIV medication and may lead to other health issues. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.
2. Protect Yourself from the Sun: Direct sun exposure can cause skin damage and worsen side effects of some HIV medications. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing (e.g., wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants), and seek shade during peak sun hours (usually between 10 am and 4 pm).
Follow Medication Guidelines: Continue taking your HIV medications as prescribed by your healthcare provider, even during the summer months. High temperatures and humidity can affect your body's ability to absorb and metabolize medications, so it's essential to adhere to your treatment plan consistently.
3. Store Medications Properly: Keep your HIV medications in a cool, dry place and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Don't leave medications in a hot car or any other place where they may become compromised.
4. Manage Side Effects: Some HIV medications may cause side effects that are worsened by the heat, such as nausea, diarrhea, or fatigue. Discuss any concerning side effects with your healthcare provider, and they may adjust your treatment plan if necessary.
5. Avoid Overexertion: Physical activity is essential, but avoid strenuous exercise or outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for cooler times like early morning or late evening for outdoor workouts. That's all for now! O.K.?
You are not alone. Far the first three years I was on and off medication. My thoughts were I am hurting my body with these pills. The truth is for HIV positive people who take our meds that are prescribed. The proof is I am undetectable and t-cell is no longer at 170. This has been an adventure for 28 years now. Many people I have met over 35 years are hope for all of us.🌹♥️
Stay in the A/C! To escape the heat.
