HIV Treatment Guidelines

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Golden Valley, AZ

Looking for maybe a website or a contact where I can stay up-to-date on HIV treatment guidelines. I live in a small town and I need to make sure my primary care doctor is giving me the best treatment. There are no HIV doctors in my area, I have to drive 200 miles for that. Thank you.

Here are some key points about HIV treatment guidelines based on the knowledge base:

- Antiretroviral Therapy (ART): The primary treatment for HIV is antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART involves taking a combination of HIV medicines every day to control the virus.

- Classes of ART Medications:
- CCR5 Antagonist: Maraviroc (Selzentry)
- Fusion Inhibitor: Enfuvirtide (Fuzeon)
- Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors: Dolutegravir (Tivicay), Bictegravir, Elvitegravir, Cabotegravir (Apretude and Vocabria), Raltegravir (Isentress)
- Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors: Rilpivirine

- Adherence to ART: Consistently taking medication as directed by a healthcare provider is crucial to prevent HIV from developing drug resistance.

- Effectiveness: ART can prevent the development of AIDS and lower the risk of transmitting HIV between sexual partners.

- Drug Resistance: When a person has drug-resistant HIV, one or more HIV medications or antiretrovirals (ARVs) do not work effectively.
