Enjoy Hearing People's Stories Of Their Journey With Hiv. What Brought You To Getting Tested? Was It Intentional Or Found By Accident?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Largo, FL

Mine was found by accident. I was very ill and admitted to the ER and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. Took a bit of time before the figured out I had HIV.

Kind of both.. After being celibate for about 10 years I thought I was out of the woods.

To reinstate my life insurance I had to get tested.

So I received a letter in the mail telling my I was +

My case was very strange, or maybe it was the lack of attention in Mexico from my doctor. Since I went to the doctor for very severe diarrhea and he sent me to have some general tests done and he told me that he would also do the HIV tests... when I went to pick up my results, I opened the envelope with the results that came in a sealed envelope. And I don't know about the United States, but in Mexico it doesn't come as a NEGATIVE or POSITIVE result, it comes in another form and I searched on Google to find out what it meant and I saw that my result was positive. The worst thing was that when I went to the dr. He only told me that I had a virus in my stomach and he didn't EVEN MENTION the HIV thing to me, which caused confusion. What made me search more online about what my result meant, which I kept seeing that it had come out positive, the thing is that not knowing how to tell my family, it took me more than a month to tell them, the truth is that it hurt my heart to tell my father, who is still alive, that according to what I had investigated, my results were like positive for HIV, in fact I invited them to go out for a drink and since I and they were a little drunk, and they too... Hoping that they would take it easier or I don't know, but it was totally the opposite, my dad went crazy and started crying and screaming 🥹😞 and the good thing was that he and my older brother, whom I told, supported me morally and immediately looked for a clinic here in Mexico that helps with HIV treatment here in Mexico. 😭

There's life insurance available! I have it. You have to carry it for two years which sucks, but the time goes by fast. Mine just kicked in a few months ago

Oh wow. What a way to find out @A myHIVteam Member. That's one thing I really don't like about being HIV+ (and HepB+ too in my case) is that you don't qualify for many forms of life and health insurance due to being perceived as a risk or having preexisting conditions no matter how healthy you are.
