I'm curious to know how many make themselves available for connecting publicly or because of fear we maintain communication online only. After recently turning 60 I have joined a couple of senior centers here in NY. Best choice I've ever made. So many new connections. Since September I've been to two off Broadway plays, seen Some Like It Hot on Broadway and even been to Carnegie Hall. Recently started the monthly Karaoke which is changing to weekly next month. I engage in public connections as necessary, based on my needs that dictate such associations. Having turned 65 here on Maui, I may not have the resources available in a big city like New York. However, we have many volunteer programs that interest me, which are supported by AARP for our local community on the island. Additionally, the Maui Aids Foundation offers a plethora of activities aimed at supporting the HIV community. Stigma around such activities exists only if you allow it to be. In an island community where everyone knows each other, it is important to take precautions, based on my standing in this community. While I won't delve into details, stigma still plays a small part in my life.
