Many times I feel as if I am all alone and have no one else out there to talk to about HIV...meaning...talking to someone else who also has HIV but is more in my age range and hasn't ever or in my case doesn't or can't afford to live in an urban area where there are established places and groups for support. I live in small community in rural New Mexico. I am also a senior (66 next week).
I am fortunate to know a few folks in the area who are my age and have HIV.
I contacted a local HIV service organization to find out about putting together a group, a sort of meet-and-greet. My doctor also got involved and hosted a couple of events, cook outs and such. We have had mixed success. People are still very leery about disclosing in front of others. I think this is especially true in rural communities.
It isn't perfect, and sometimes there is still nobody to talk to when you may need it, but it has been a step forward.
