What's One Thing About HIV You Feel Isn't Talked About Enough?
I believe that the aging HIV population, and their experiences is not talked about enough. Specifically, I'm referring to their different health needs, but also, I think even more importantly, the loneliness, stigmatism, social isolation and mental health issues that many of us older HIV men and women suffer.
It is gradually getting more attention, this issue, but I think it needs to happen faster.
I also think that, in general, HIV stigmatism is still alive and well, and is hardly ever discussed anymore as it used to be. I think that really needs to change and that the non HIV community needs to make themselves more educated and spread that newfound knowledge, and that includes HIV advocacy groups, organizations and even the state and federal governments. All of these need to get involved to educate the public about U equals U and end this stigmatism once and for all.
What is not talked about enough is still being labeled (at least I don't feel that way) but some people that I know feel this way. They close themselves off to others when HIV is talked about. They can't turn to anyone. Sometimes it is talked about but not enough.
But this just my opinion.
Michaelduane talk about it ❗ plus they don't tell you how the meds with the side effects.
The stigma in the LGBTQ+ community, especially among older, negative gay men. That is where I have sometimes felt a lack of support and/or being shunned. We need to address this in our own communities before we can expect the broader community not to stigmatize us.
Undetectable=untransmissible. I wish I didn't need to explain this constantly. I wish the medical community shared this information more readily as I think it's super important.
