I Don’t Know If This Is A Dumb Question Or Not But, Should I Disclose My Status To My Eye Doctor?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

Quick backstory: i have a rare eye disease that is closely monitored by specialist. (Hence how i initially found out my status) it was suggested in 2004, that i’d be tested yearly to ensure nothing else causes issues with my eyesight. I’m on several eyedrops but no oral medications for it any more. So i was curious (this is the only doctor i haven’t told)

If the issue of disclosure bothers anyone, weigh in on the pros and cons of disclosing. I have disclosed to all of my health care providers when I register to see them for the first time, it is usually on the application asking about existing health conditions. HIV is main stream nowadays and the stigma having it is not as bad as it was when I was diagnosed early on. Back then in the 80's I was really struggling and fearful of sharing my status with anyone except for my family and close friends. Be Safe.

I as well disclose first to health care workers and let them adjust their protocol to fit my illness. If they want to pass me off then it is their choice and not a shock

GM, yes you should, it affects the eyes also, take care of you first!!! 🌻💫❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽... No matter, stigmatized is something in all my years of being positive, does not get any better. Even as far this disease has come, people are living longer!! I was diagnosed 27 years ago but possibly had it longer. I’m still here stronger and blessed!🙏🏽, Loving me my life!!!!

I know that this is all new to you but please understand that medical professionals such as an eye doctor have heard worse. I know the stigma of HIV is still very much part of your makeup but understand that it has been around as long as cancer but not longer than cancer. Please stop stigmatizing yourself There is nothing wrong with telling a medical professional that you're HIV positive. Especially if he needs to look at your eyes. Much love 👁️👁️🌈❤️🌈🤗👍
