Your Answers: The Worst HIV Advice (Infographic)

Posted on May 14, 2017

We asked and you answered! We posted this question: What bits of "advice" do you wish people would stop telling you? and many of you took the time to respond.

What did we learn? From the unconcerned ("It's not so bad, right?") to the plain unhelpful ("Try to rest more"), advice is hurled at us from friends, family, coworkers, even strangers. While most suggestions are probably well-intentioned, hearing them over and over can make us feel that our condition is minimized and misunderstood.

Some of the most common answers we heard:

  • But you don't look sick!
  • Think more positively.
  • Try to rest more.
  • I'm SO sorry!
  • Have you tried natural supplements?
  • It's not so bad, right?
  • Try to relax.
  • But you look fine!
  • Maybe you should keep to yourself for a while...

Everyone's situation is different and not all of these apply to each person. Tell us: What advice about HIV do YOU wish people would stop telling you?
