That’s right, your doctor is your best source of information.

I also had severe kidney issues to the point the doctor called it renal failure.

Here is what I found:

You may want to bring this up next time you see your doctor.

Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is generally considered safer for the kidneys than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), an older version of the drug. TAF is found in some HIV combination drugs, including Descovy, Biktarvy, and Odefsey.
Explanation
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)
TDF is an HIV medication that has been linked to kidney problems. It's sold as Viread and is also a component of Truvada and other combination drugs.
Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF)
TAF is a newer version of tenofovir that's considered safer for the kidneys. People who switch from TDF to TAF have shown improved kidney function.
Atazanavir (Reyataz)
Atazanavir can cause kidney stones and interstitial nephritis, a condition that causes swelling in the spaces between the kidney's filtering units.
Indinavir (Crixivan)
Indinavir is a protease inhibitor that can cause kidney stones.
Other HIV medications that can cause kidney problems include: AZT (Retrovir), ddI (Videx), and d4T (Zerit).
Regular monitoring of kidney function is recommended for people taking HIV medications.
