In 1992, I was told I was HIV positive. Since then, I've had my ups and downs with my health, like everyone else. In April 2024, I was diagnosed with gout and diabetes. Fortunately, I don't have to take medication for that. Yesterday my doctor told me that from the x-rays taken in April, I have very significant arthritis in my right knee and both hips and that the damage to the joints is something that is seen in people in their 70s and 80s (I'm 57) and bad enough to warrant knee and hip… read more

Unfortunately I’m finding out that hiv causes lots of inflammation which basically means your immune system is always in overdrive. ARV meds make sure we never get to the last stage of HIV which is AIDS. As my doctor always tells me I’m not gonna die from AIDS as long as I take my meds but I will probably be like non HIV people and drop dead from a heart attack, cancer, etc etc. all be it a little faster then the general population. I’m 59 so if I make it to 75 I’m ok with it however 80 would be nice lol

HIV can indeed contribute to or worsen certain conditions, including those you mentioned. Chronic HIV infection, especially if untreated or poorly controlled, can lead to systemic inflammation and immune system dysregulation, which may accelerate age-related conditions like arthritis. Additionally, people with HIV are at higher risk of developing comorbidities such as diabetes and gout, partly due to the long-term effects of the virus and antiretroviral therapy (ART).

For arthritis, studies show that HIV can lead to earlier onset of age-related conditions, including joint issues, due to chronic inflammation. Similarly, gout can be influenced by metabolic changes associated with HIV or ART. It's essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to manage these conditions and ensure your HIV treatment is optimized to minimize further complications.
