Roberto10, I have had lipodystrophy for many years now. My first medications were a double whammy - AZT, which caused lipoatrophy (loss of fat on arms, legs, face), and Crixivan, which caused lipohypertrophy (fat deposits in strange places.) I was on that regimen for 11 years. When I switched from AZT to new meds, the lipoatrophy lessened in severity after several years. It is still evident in some spots, but much less noticeable. The fat deposits are another story. I had to have a buffalo hump surgically removed from my upper back/neck. It came back, but is smaller than before. The other deposits are still there. The visceral fat in my abdomen is my main concern because it can cause other health issues. I could use Egrifta, but my insurance won't pay for it and if you stop using it, the problem usually returns. So, I try to exercise, eat a healthy diet and get proper rest.

Hi Roberto10, I am dealing with that even now after 28 years. I started off taking the drugs that cause the hard belly fat but now I'm taking Biktarvy and Prezcobix. Most doctors will say exactly that, no but you have stay focused and educate yourself. Take care and be blessed.

Weight gain and lipodystrophy can be challenging aspects of living with HIV. Here are some key points from my knowledge base:

- Lipodystrophy: This condition involves abnormal fat distribution, often leading to a "hard belly" due to visceral fat around the organs. It can also cause fat loss in other areas, like the face.
- Medications: Some HIV medications, including those containing emtricitabine, have been associated with weight gain and lipodystrophy. However, not all doctors agree on the direct link.
- Fatty Liver: This can be a part of lipodystrophy and may be exacerbated by certain medications.

It's important to continue discussing your concerns with your doctor and consider seeking a second opinion if you feel your concerns are not being fully addressed.
