STIGMA, Have You Had Any Personal Experiences & If So What Are Some Of The Coping Mechanisms You Used?

Having HIV is hard enough, adding stigma on top of that can be even more challenging. Despite all the advances, the promotion of U=U there is still stigma surrounding HIV. So my question is have you personally encountered stigma and if so how did you handle it?

My HIV status is nobody’s business. Except mine and my doctor. Not even my dentist notice. It’s none of their damn business. Dennis should treat every patient properly. Proper protocols would prevent any issues with everyone. My partner knows, But. Few. others. I keep it to myself

I only disclose my U=U status to guys I have been dating for a while and whom I see as a potential partner, and that's how it ends... all the time!

I guess I'm dating the wrong guys and I wouldn't want to be the one to educate them on this. Because if they want to know, they would have read about it already.

I didnt come accross it much these days, however my new Dentist in Brighton said that I should not be given anti biotics for a severe tooth ache as I was hiv positive.. Hes from Ukraine and seemed to have some mis conceptions around hiv. I have now sacked him, and am looking for a new Dentist.

Stigma is a tough equation that will most likely never be solved. It is now a part of the gay version of 'cancel culture'. For me, what is extremely daunting is that there are so many people who base their prejudice against us from fear, dichotomy of opinion (negative=good, positive=bad/dirty), and good ol' defiant ignorance. I have joined HIV support groups, and hung in there for a while; but even they can be exhausting. I guess that the best thing that I can do is find inner peace, do a lot of self care, and explore hobbies and interests where HIV isn't even an issue.

Stigma is just someone’s ignorant opinion. We’re human and it hurts our feelings when people have negative views of us, but we don’t need to give their views power over us.
