When someone with HIV takes their antiretroviral therapy (ART) consistently and effectively, their viral load can become so low that standard tests can’t detect it. This is known as being "undetectable." However, even when undetectable, small levels of HIV can still be found in different parts of the body, and the risk of HIV transmission through blood remains. Therefore, people with HIV, regardless of their viral load, are ineligible to donate blood or plasma.
