Shots

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Princeton, WV

My question is I'm talking to my doctor about getting on the shots I'm doing great on the pills I'm on right now but I would like to change to the shots my viral load is undetectable and CD4 is way up there so I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of whether I should just stay on my meds or try out the shots I was told if the shot didn't work that I can't go back on the pill does anyone have any answers for that?

Most people do not have the “wild type” strain of HIV-1. That allows for no resistance to HIV meds. I have that strain so I have changed meds with no problems. I am on Biktarvy and do not plan on switching. Since you can develop resistance, if it was ME, I would not switch because your numbers are great. HIV is as much a numbers game as it is a treatment game. One does follow the other. The goal is always U = U.

@A myHIVteam Member. Just like with oral medication, the worry is missed doses, say putting off the next round of shots for a couple weeks. The infrequent dosing may make people less attentive to keeping on top of the virus.

I'll stick to my biktarvy for now
Gilead presented RWD from their BICSTaR study at HIV Glasgow 2022 showing Biktarvy® is an efficacious and well-tolerated regimen regardless of prior treatment or comorbidity status for people living with HIV. This BICSTaR RWE complements and endorses results also presented from two Biktarvy Phase III clinical trials.

My Doctor's advice was basic if it's not broken do not fix it. I doing great, on Biktarvy and if a time comes that I need to change we will talk about the shots or something else at that point She said lets wait and see how other people do on the shot. I never miss a does and the shot is for people that miss there meds.

I just switched to the shots. I was told that if I missed my shot appointment by a week, I COULD still take my pills until I could get in to get my next shot.
