Has Anyone Had Experience With Hospice Care?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

I never wanted to be a burden on my family. I’m a long term survivor but my body and yes my mind are failing. She’d I went on disability in 1989 I didn’t think I would be around this long. I’ve had a good life but I’m tired of fighting. I am alive but don’t have a life anymore. Yea I’m feeling sorry for myself now. Any experience with hospice care would be helpful. Thanks

I worked in nursing homes for 14yrs I know this, the part
is one lays there till they parish yes it’s about the money not the care, some that work in nursing homes care and some don’t me knowing about nursing home I would never want to be left in one let alone not having family, everything in life is expensive, this why I say wait till the very end and be in the hospital to pass not in a facility especially if one don’t have family, the insurance most of us have don’t cover nothing, I want to be in my bed or a hospital to pass.. having no family or no one sucks, I had a best friend that passed a yr ago I became her CNA to take care of her till the end she got moved to her sisters house it took about 2 months after she was told she had 6 months. It’s hard to even think about it yes I understand we have to, even if one didn’t have HIV/AIDS it’s a plan in life, plan ahead 😇

Thank you, but my health doesn’t allow me to make commitments, especially if I am needed at a specific time and date.

There's usually a wide range of hospices. Have you visited some of the ones which you could afford?

And, sadly, there are frequently reports of abuse and/or homophobia in some hospices. Because of this my partner and myself are determined never to enter a hospice. We'll end our lives at home instead.

We have recently been hunting for a suitable hospice for an 80-year-old relation. Some are depressing and ghastly. Places of death. Or utterly sterile. Or run by deluded holy-Joes! We found one with elegantly decorated single rooms, in a pleasant and peaceful environment, with seemingly pleasant staff, but the monthly price there means it is only for the very wealthy.

I recommend you make a list of possible hospices and then arrange to be shown around them at your leisure, AND to be given full details of the fees.

@A myHIVteam Member. @A myHIVteam Member. is feeling much the same way. He has stopped his ART , and recently sought & started hospice care (at home). I don't agree with his choices, but he may be able to answer some of your questions.

Hospice is for the ending of one’s life, there are there for comfort for one and family if there is some, it’s true usually one will start out with CNA and Nurse, private, CNA they will do round the clock and nurse comes in once a week usually that’s out of pocket unless one has great insurance, once one gets to the point where we going home soon Hospice will come in and make one comfortable with meds.
so one don’t have any discomfort they will keep
you comfortable, till one goes home to Heaven, this is a hard decision and to watch one transition 😢, usually one needs to set all this up before hand, usually if one has family it helps things to be somewhat easier but how easy can it be to set up ones last days in Life, I believe in Cremation so I will have all paid for and be ready before hand, I for sure don’t want to go in a nursing home or in a Hospice Facility, one will lay there and parish, I would rather be in the hospital or at home in my bed
my environment, I hope and Pray someone will stand up for you, I know if I was in the area I would make sure one of us that have no one I would be by there side to comfort the situation, a HIV Team mate or being a friend, my sister lived with HIV and finally went into AIDs 1994
so sad so hard to deal with we were very close family, she insisted to be home to pass she set up her funeral before hand I was the baby of the family I could not deal till the end I still till today feel like I let her down I couldn’t deal, now since I am in the Medical field I can deal so sad 😭
I live with HIV since 1994 and stay strong but all in all I still don’t want to think of that day but I will be ready.
Blessings Randall I’m here 😇
