Did Anyone Experience Any Diet Changes After Being Diagnosed?

Mesa, AZ

I don’t know if they’re even related but I seemed to have developed a gluten intolerance after being diagnosed. So now I choose to be totally gluten free.

Just be careful. I became lactose intolerant but I also became calcium deficient so I need to supplement my calcium with vitamins. Do not go overboard with gluten-free products as you do need some essential nutrients from your food.

Kinda. I can't decide it it's that or slowed digestion. I do know that cakes, biscuits and breads in general make me very uncomfortable. I was going to bring it up to my dr. at my next appointment. I've been eating a lot of sour dough products instead. They seem to be easier to digest. My stomach is mad at me today because I made biscuits.

I developed a serious allergy to tree nuts after starting treatment in the ‘90s. Had the tests listing all but pine nuts. 20 years later, retested and allergic to none. Of course my meds have changed. I have never been given an explanation. When I have asked, I have received a stare, followed by a reply that tells me they think I want to sue someone.

Yes, many people with HIV experience changes in their diet after being diagnosed. Here are some key points:

- Motivation and Support: Changing your diet can be challenging, and finding motivation is often easier when done alongside others who understand the obstacles and rewards. Connecting with others who have HIV through platforms like myHIVteam can provide support and shared experiences.
- Healthy Eating Patterns: A balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, and a variety of proteins can help support a healthy weight and reduce instances of side effects from antiretroviral therapy (ART).
- Weight Gain: Some individuals may notice weight gain, especially in the abdomen, as a side effect of ART. Healthy eating can help manage this.
- Consultation with Healthcare Providers: It's important to consult with healthcare providers before making significant dietary changes or adding supplements, as some herbs and botanicals may interact with antiretroviral drugs.
