Hey Christopher, good question. Your doctor can offer a test named the Geno Type Test. It determines if the type of hiv you were infected with is resistant to what hiv medications. When I had it done, I was anxious because it was the fear of the unknown. For me, it turned out I had no resistance. Your hiv specialist should be equipped with what meds to start you on. For me, they started me off with a set of older medications so that If I didn't get satisfactory results they could offer the next class of hiv meds. So far, I've had 2 changes but not because of resistance but because a newer drug was made to be less toxic and yet, give me the same results so it just made sense.

What has helped me is writing down questions before going in. I hope this helps a little.

All of the 30+ years of taking various HIV meds, it took several different cocktails to determine the best for my physiology. As we're all unique and have different DNA, what works for one may not work for another.
The best source for your query will definitely be your ID (infectious disease) Doctor, also mentioned by most of the team who responded.
My cocktail currently is Triumeq, Prezista, & Norvir I take 1 pill each per day. I have been on this regimen for over 10 years or when Triumeq came out.
In the past during different regimens, I was taking up to 16 pills daily for HIV.

I believe that depends on your doctor to determine that? Or you can ask your doctor that question only cause everyone is different from the other. Thats my opinion
