Dropping CD4 Numbers

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Marion, NY

Over the last year my CD4 has dropped from well over 1000 and my percentages at 50% to CD4 of 496 with the percentages remaining the same. I was diagnosed 20 years ago with a CD4 of zero and my VL in the millions. My physician seems unconcerned and actually dismissed my concern when asked about the drop in CD4. Should I NOT be concerned? Or do I have cause for worry!

My cd4 count has always been rather low...took me 10 yrs to get over 200 and now it just sits in that area. But my percentages are good. So my Dr. also tells me not to worry because my percentages are good. I still worry...but maybe I shouldn't so much. Big Hug & Love - John

CD4% is a more more reliable gold standard than absolute CD4. That used to be the measure but is old school now. Absolute does not take into count the total components of the blood which are constantly changing even through out the day. That is CD4% gives a much more true perspective on immune response and ability to fight diseases.
