Most of the resources for HIV deals with the gay community or is targeted towards the gay community. The HIV+ straight community feels left out in so many ways when dealing with this disease. How can the gay community bring more openness, and more resources to the positive straight community? How can the gay community help the straight community deal with this disease as one and not separate? How can we get HIV organizations to bring awareness to the positive straight community? I was diagnosed in 2012. The person who was my biggest support was a gay man who listened to me cry answered all my questions and was just a damn good friend! I cherish him to this day. He always made me feel like I was going to be alright. I call him my emotional husband. Gay or straight I don’t care just be a good friend!

I remember when in the 80's HIV/AIDS was considered a "gay" disease. The LGTBQ community was the first affected by the virus and with no backing form government or even the medical-social general community. I remember the panic, the funerals, etc.
However, now, at least in NYC, HIV/AIDS programs are for anyone regardless of their sexual orientation etc.
Personally, I do not believe in a "lifestyle" that is separate for gay's and straights, I live a human lifestyle and my sexual orientation does not dictate my humanness or interactions in a globalized world. In fact, HIV/AIDS, because of ignorance has become prevalent among heterosexuals globally and at an alarming rate.
One of the things I recommend is that people form dialogues and collaboration regardless of race, cultural differences, sex, sexual orientation, etc. Let's eliminate all "isms" that are negative and which the only purpose is separateness. It takes you, him/her, me, etc to do this every day. Voice our concerns regarding this and dialogue to break barriers that separate what cannot really be separated because we are humans being affected by a virus regardless of who the person is or identify with.

Well there can be a Big support groups because people deal with HIV in many different ways. Some people have support from family, friends and some don't have support at all from no one. The ones that don't have any type of support is the ones that I worry about the most because they feel alone in this world and just give up on life.

Xavier, I've been giving ur question about equality within HIV support groups a lot of thought. Sadly, I can only see the cause as being a Social one. When HIV was first made public, the communities panic, then it got labeled "the Gay disease!" from there, it was OPEN season on Gays. Then came the FEAR, (Ryan White) EMS & Doctors refusing to treat HIV victims, & the Hetero-sexual community (OMG!) If they had their way, ALL of us would have been either put into Leper colonies or out right euthanized. So, the Gay community had too band together; not only to fight HIV/AIDS but to survive. Part of that survival created Support Groups, which started off as totally GAY, White, MEN, then evolved to include gay's of color & now it must evolve again to include Hetero-sexual. Sadly, it's a case of the chicken's coming home to roost. We must look beyond pass transgressions & be willing to GROW together & stop letting the trivial divide us, that's how we fix the problem. Education + Empathy + Open-mindedness = "THE CURE!"
